Standing 35 feet tall, A Subtlety, or the Marvelous Sugar Baby, towers high with a story that reminds us of the past many try to leave behind. Artist, Kara Walker, created this bleached sugar bare of clothing except a hair tie around her head as a reminder of where she is from to remind us of the sugar trade. The decaying sugar used to build this piece, exemplifies the story behind the placement and the why it was created in the first place.
Created in the, Domino Sugar Factory built in 1882, produced majority if not all of the sugar being fueled in the US, during its prime. The company was shut down due to low paying wages and poor working conditions that was subjected towards immigrants and non-whites. In which, this ending closely resembles the beginning and end to the Sugar trade build on the backs of slaves. Kara Walker, fuel behind this piece could be found in a book titled, “Sweetness and Power: The Place of Sugar in Modern History.” In this book, she learned of the great desire and power built around the hunger for the sweet treat.

We build on top of history so that it will soon be forgotten as there is no reminder of its sorrow. And well with this piece Walker doesn’t allow that to happen. How can something so meaningful to a cup of sweet tea have such a money hungry fueled back story. But we’re not reminded of that, we only get the good. The minorities are highest at risk of diabetes, which is in direct correlation with sugar, which plagued their ancestors of God given rights. A history that still kills the people of
