The concept of health has changed throughout time and across various societies. To improve the health of individuals or populations, it is essential to have a better understanding of what its determinants are. In U.S. we allocate lots of resources and spend more on health care than any other nation in the world. Yet, the U.S. health care system falls far short of its potential and ranks very poorly on almost every measure of health status (Schroeder, 2007).
