In the article by Günther Maihold and Rosa María Sauter de Maihold, “Capos, Reinas, y Santos - La Narcocultura en México,” the author discusses narcoculture through textual analysis. The authors treats narcoculture as the modern subculture that has surge from drug trafficking and the War on Drugs. The authors examine books, movies, and songs to understand identity representations in the narcoculture. This is achieved by analyzing the topic through three themes: profiles of drug lords, religion, and women. Since my research focuses on narcocorridos, I will limit my annotation to the section about profiles on drug lors and women.

For instance, in the song by Los Invasores de Nuevo León about Rafael Caro Quintero, the song discusses Quintero’s transformation from a generous poor person to a generous drug trafficker. Also, songs such as “My three animals,” by Los Tucanes de Tijuana, portrays the Americans as “low-lives” since United States is the largest drug client group. This reinforces the idea of drug traffickers as superior and smart. On the other hand, in “De Reinas de la Belleza a ‘Reinas’: Las Mujeres en el Narcotrafico,” the authors examine the depiction of women in the narcoculture. The authors claim that, just as narcocorridos, narcoart (novelas, movies, books) serve to tell drug world stories.
