2. (Physical characteristics) Greg Gaines is the main character in the book and it’s told from his point of view. He is described as looking like “pudding” in the book. He is pale, slightly overweight, “rat faced”, and also is a mouth breather.
Earl is a short person that also looks very young despite, being a senior. Mad is his default mood and will kick you in the head if you call him short. Rachel is a tall girl with curly hair and a big smile. (Mental Description) Greg gaines has a grim sense of humour and a realist point of view. Earl is a very mad person and has a bad home life with his brothers and his mom but is still a good person. Rachel is an optimist who is soon overwhelmed by the reality

Beginning: Greg explains “how to survive high school” with the process of never being fully acquainted with one group, and keeping a low profile. Also Rachel is diagnosed with leukemia and so she and greg began to hang out because his mom suggests it would make her feel better.
Middle: Rachel begins chemo and is introduced to the movies by Earl and greg. Greg then gets mad about this because they promised never to show anyone the movies. He also becomes better friends with rachel and people begin to assume it’s a relationship even though it is completely platonic. This is also when greg begins to realize the faults in himself and slightly beings to think about himself as a person.
End: The book at this point is a lot of realization of things mostly about rachel deciding to be taken off chemo because it is making little difference in the cancer and is making her feel horrible. Greg also realizes how selfish he’s been to not actually get to know his friends because of social stereotypes. This is also the point in the book when they try to make a film for rachel like all their other films but it doesn’t go as planned when they can’t find a solid idea that will be like the others. The movie turns out to be terrible as described and is about her having cancer which is the normal thing to do but ends up not working out. So in the end Rachel ends up dying as expected and Greg ends up going to a community college for film and earl ends up working at a wendy's trying to put
