In “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak, it is the time of Hitler’s control in Nazi Germany. Max Vandenburg and Liesel Meminger experience tragedy during this period before meeting one another and it is this circumstance that brings them together. Although he suffered, Max plays a special role in Liesel’s life and gives her purpose to live. Throughout the novel, it is shown through their bond of words. Secondly, Liesel tends to Max when he is sick and stuck in bed. Lastly, they share their background knowledge of isolation from Germans and the struggle of it.

Down in the basement of the Huberman’s house is where Liesel and Max can be found bonding. He teaches her to read, write, and use words as a creative outlet. While expressing themselves they are able to relate to each other. This brings Max to give the youngest Huberman books that depict their relationship. One of these mini stories is The Standover Man in which he illustrates their friendship and what it means to him. It is created on the pages of Mein Kampf symbolizing that their words are bigger than those belonging to Hitler. There is also The Word Shaker which is about how strong words can be.
