‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time’, by Mark Haddon is narrated in first person by the protagonist Christopher, which gives the reader a deeper understanding of him. If it was narrated in third person, our views of the characters would change greatly, as we would be seeing them through our eyes instead of Christopher’s- who sees things differently from most others because he has Asperger’s Syndrome.

People with Asperger’s Syndrome typically show and feel less emotions when compared to other people. Christopher has Asperger’s Syndrome, and is a very practical person. His emotions never get in the way of his logical thinking. An example of this when he finds letters in his fathers room which were sent from his mother, who up until then, he had believed to be dead. Christopher thinks, ‘I wondered whether I should open the envelope because it was something I had taken from Fathers room. But then I reasoned that it was addressed to me so it belonged to me so it was ok to open it.’ Christopher

When he reads the letter from his mother he thinks it is possible that the letter might be for a different Christopher. He thinks ‘I was excited. When I started writing my book there was only one mystery to solve. Now there were two.’ Most people would jump to conclusions and assume the letter was for them, but Christopher was determined to explore every logical explanation that he can. This shows how his mind works differently compared to others in terms of emotions. He didn’t let himself feel any hope that his mother was alive, like most people would, and instead threw himself into investigating if he was the Christopher the letter was sent to. In other novels, this might be an emotional scene, but because Christopher narrates it, it is very logical because the reader is reading from Christopher’s point of view; they are also forced to think logically, instead of
