Annie isn’t Just a Story
I was thirteen years old when I found out my aunt had offered to foster two new children. In the past month, she has officially adopted them. I never really understood how rough life was for the kids in the foster system until my mom told me the story of Khloe and Aliya and how they came into the foster care system. They have the same mom, but different dads. All three of the parents had been doing drugs and formed an unsafe environment. The Department of Social Services had already attempted to allow another family member to take care of them. Eventually, that fell through, and they ended up in the system. Through finding out this new technique to help the children, their grades have improved. Education Next observed in an article that,“Acceptance and Resistance By all appearances, the Parent/Teacher Home Visit Project enjoys an easy relationship with school leaders and school unions alike”(Kronholz, 2016). This concept is important. The foster parent, child, and teacher are all creating new relationships that are bringing the kids outside of their so-called “shell”. There was a kid who struggled in school and after the visit, the teacher learned more about him and how he learns and was able to help him succeed by tailoring the teaching method to help him out. This has started in Washington D.C. schools but has picked up in Sacramento and a couple of other cities. A foster parent even came out and said, “I want so much for my son. Him trying to succeed. Maybe not succeeding, but just trying."(Kronholz, 2016). This foster parent dealt with a foster child who did not do good in school. He just wanted to give up and quit at school. This new concept of the teachers coming to the houses and learning more about that child in particular. This helps the foster child have a more independent personality and the teacher will view them as an independent person. The parents want the best for the children whether they are foster or biological and through the at home teacher conferences they get to help their children whether the child will open up or not. This is not the only form that you can help a foster
