Soldiers Boys is a novel written by Dean Hughes. The story is set during World War 2 and Hughes tells the story of two ambitious teenagers from different places. They both join their country’s armies and fight to prove their worth. Both have caring families that are not happy about their leaving. Both boys know what they want to accomplish but have no idea what to expect.
Sixteen year old Spencer Morgan leaves Utah in hopes of becoming a paratrooper. He starts training to become great and prove to his friends and family that he can be a hero. Fifteen-year-old Dieter Hedrick joins Hitler Youth and eventually is promoted into the German Army. He is determined to show how patriotic and courageous he is no matter what. Although both boys are from different sides of the war they both have very similar goals and ambitions.

Dieter experienced some hardships early on. One of Dieter’s friends is killed by a British Spitfire and his other friend is shot for deserting. Dieter proves his worth as a leader and meets Adolf Hitler who gives them medals for their contributions to the German war. Dieter goes into Wehrmacht and gets assigned to a bad unit. Dieter meets Schaefer a man who has been through a lot. He is pretty much the opposite of Dieter in a way and constantly upsets Dieter with his unpatriotic attitude. Schaefer had a son in the Hitler Youth who was killed using an AA gun in a bombing raid. Schaefer is critical of Dieter’s love for Hitler and says that Germany should surrender because they have no way of winning the war. Dieter and Schaefer’s relationship grows as time
