Standing up against an archaic and sexist institution can be daunting and overwhelming. It is hard not to be drowned out by the din of their ignorance. But we have a duty; we have a voice and we must use it. That is what the author, Cade Leebron, did when she wrote the poem, I’m Drinking in Bed. This sarcastic and satirical poem speaks out against government officials making medical and moral choices for women based on misconceptions and general misunderstanding of how the human body works.
I wanted to choose a poem based upon my knowledge and understanding of the topic. I stay up to date with current events in politics and equality movements. I chose this poem because I have always had strong convictions for women’s rights, and abhorrence for doctors and our electors overstepping boundaries. This poem was written in response to the CDC report stating that without birth control women who are sexually active should not consume alcohol.

She shared her opinion on the matter in a way that was not directly insulting to politians but called them out in a facetious manner that was more than conspicuous when reading between the lines. Her words portrayed a woman who felt the injustice of rich men living in a different social dimension making uneducated judgements about her body and capability to make good choices. The author’s meticulous ability to use literary devices helps her convey her purpose and convictions with finesse. Using literal and metaphorical imagery, she is speaking to both men and women.
