The Dance is a poem by the writer William Carlos Carlos. We discussed this poem in class and thought of many ways in which to interpret it. We talked about how the poem was very straightforward and how there was not much underlying meaning to it. I will also discuss this further and add on to this. The Dance is primarily about something in the human world. Specifically about the painting by Pieter Breughel entitled “The Kermesse.” To me, the addressee of the poem is one who has seen the painting by Brueghel and has admired it as much as Williams has. Even though you do not have to be fully knowledgeable of Breughel’s work, it helps to be able to picture the poem better. The Dance is a work of art inspired by a different work of art. It is dependent on Breughel and his creative mind. Since the poem is inspired by “The Kermesse,” without it the poem would have not existed. The poem brings the painting to life with its vibrant imagery and descriptions. If you’re not very keen on the visual arts, you would appreciate the way The Dance makes it possible for the painting to exist outside of the visual art world. We talked about the poem’s enjambment and how it sort of just keeps circling like the dancers. It sort of goes with how the poem and the painting circle around each other’s existence. When you read the poem, you can visualize what Williams is describing. Then you can look at the actual painting to see if what you saw was similar to what Breughel had in mind. The painting literally gave the poem life, because, without it, the poem itself would not have been created. Their existence revolves around each other. Since the painting is older than the poem, I would imagine its popularity had decreased since it was painted. The poem brought more light to the painting. Not only do these pieces coexist but they also take from each other. They have a sort of symbiotic relationship where they exist off each other. Life imitates art and art imitates life.
