The Hmong were mercenaries for the United States during the Vietnam War. After the war ended the Hmong were allowed to immigrate to the United States in the 1970’s. The book, The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, is centered on one Hmong family the Lee’s. The Lee family had written, language, culture and religious beliefs which all clashed with the established medical community. These clashes lead to many barriers for their healthcare. The Lee’s had a daughter Lia who suffered from grand mal seizures. They loved and doted on her. They believed that Lia’s seizures were a blessing and allowed an individual to reach higher consciences. “The family questioned the doctors’ intentions and efforts in treating their daughter”(Fadiman.)
