“THESAMEWAYBETTER/READER” by Ron Moppett is an ode to the story and essence of Calgary. Its an tribute to the history of Calgary, but an optimistic outlook towards its future. The tiles weave the story of prosperous individuals visiting the Palliser Hotel in their black top hats; the journey of easterners headed west into the Rocky Mountains. There is imagery of nature, that beckons to viewers, regardless of their heritage. Part of the purpose is to invoke individuals to examine their own memories, like Moppett examines his throughout the piece. Many public works around the city embody Calgary in diverse ways. There is symbolism in what the bull represents in finance, a bull market is the upward trend of stocks and a sign of good times. Richard Loffler’s portrait of the famous Calgary Stampede bull, “Outlaw” also acts as a representation of Calgary’s future, an upward trend. Throughout public art commissioned in Calgary, the future of the city is an often-depicted portrayal. Only being ridden once successfully, Outlaw is the embodiment of the wild west that echoes in todays Calgary Stampede. Its an homage to an animal at the height of its’ own power, and the way it represents the city itself.
