Americans tend to believe that when their child is rebellious to go to bed at night and get out of bed in the morning it’s because they’re lazy or just want to refuse. However, in the book The Teenage Brain, Frances Jensen shares her theory about sleep and she gives some reasons why teens lack sleep. Teenagers need to know that sleep helps them learn, release melatonin and help them emotionally. Sleep is not just a waste of time. On page 92, Jensen states “A good night sleep, a nap, or simply a few quiet moments of relaxation in the middle of the day, is important for turning learning into long-term memories.” Jensen’s point is that studying the night before an exam then getting a good night sleep will help what you have learned turn into memories. This finding challenges the belief that studying at night shouldn’t be the first time you see the information, it should be a review. As a result, teens get better grades and are more confident. On page 89, Jensen states “Melatonin, a hormone critical to inducing sleep, is released two hours later at night in a teenager’s brain than it is an adult’s.” Jensen’s point is that teenagers have melatonin released later and tend to get them tired.
