In "We Real Cool" by Gwendolyn Brooks, we are given a lot of information and clues as to what she is trying to say using only 4 stanzas containing two lines per stanza. As you read the poem, the first thing that I noticed was the use of language that appears poor grammatically. I also notice how short the poem is and the fact that every word is a single syllable. It almost appears to be from somebody that is not very educated and has no English skills but I guess that is part of the effect the author is trying to convey. The fact that every word is a single syllable, "Cool, Left, School" (lines 1,2) I think is a symbolic form of expressing the quickness of how these young people lived their lives. They are living it as though there is no tomorrow and just have fun and everything happens in a flash like the way they words are written. they leave school, have fun, live day by day, and die soon. the tone is a somber and depressing one and i think she is trying to tell us what happens when you drop out and worry only about having fun and getting into trouble. …show more content…
The tone appears to be both pessimistic and optimistic at the same time in that it presents the hardships that his people have had to endure "I've been a slave" (line 4) but also optimistic and proud of the accomplishments that they have made including building the pyramids and being so musically talented. I kind of get a sense from his writing that despite all the problems his people have endured, the author feels a strong sense of pride of being
