In the movie “What’s eating Gilbert Grape” Gilbert family are what is eating him. They are eating him, but metaphorically, not literally. The entire film shows food in one way or another. His last name is Grape, If you analyze why the author used this name you can see how his whole life relates to this last name and to his relationship with his family. His mother, Bonnie Grape became obese once her husband died, this was when the problem started with Gilbert, and Gilbert works in an out of date grocery store that has a lot of competition with the new Foodland store. All of these examples involve food, and in one form showing the effects of how his family is eating him alive. To start off, a grape is a fruit that grows on vines. A grape vine is not like a tree or a bush. It has no specific form that it grows in, it grows based on its surroundings. If there is nothing to support it up it will grow on the ground and get very tangled, as it tries to find something to support it, But if a farmer takes care of the vine and puts up stakes to keep it from falling. It shows the whole family eating more than once. When they eat, they move the entire table and food to the mom’s sofa. This is Bonnie’s life, it is where she eats, sleeps, and watches movies at.
