Typically when you read a story, you don’t look for its deep meaning, nor do you really care what it is. You read the story, then you go on with your life. In the effort to change my terrible habits, This is my attempt at my own personal analysis for the story, “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been.” The story was released in 1966, and at the time let reporters scrambling to find its meaning. Connie is 15 years old in the story, and is always having trouble with her mom and sister. Disobeying her mother by going to parties and, inching closer to older boys. Now, typically when a young teenager has problems, they turn to their father for help. Everyone has their viewpoints on the story Adam and Eve, and people might find that this story is controversial. Whether it was real or not, remains totally up to you. In the story of Adam and Eve, they can eat from all trees except one, a sacred apple tree. A serpent comes and convinces Eve to eat from the tree, claiming that nothing bad could happen, and tries to claim God is the one sinning by not letting Eve eat the apple in the tree. In the story, “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been,” Arnold Friend tries to convince Connie to come with him, with the sins of her family members. Stating phrases such as, “They are at a barbeque, they don’t care about you,” and Arnold constantly states that he will take care of her. Arnold could relate to the serpent in the story of Adam of Eve, trying to get what he wants by using the sins of others as persuasion. In both endings, you can see that the antagonist had gotten what he/it wanted, and successfully persuaded the victim. The victim was pressured to make an unconscious decision, not knowing what could happen in the future. Arnold Friend tricked Connie, by portraying the actions of others as sins, even though most of them weren't. Although the story was very entertaining and suspenseful, there is a lot more to it than what meets the eye.
