The NCAA makes nearly 1 billion dollars yearly because of the product they sell, college athletes. Thousands of athletes train and compete for numerous hours, taking time out of their lives to provide televised entertainment which benefits the NCAA. College athletes work full-time jobs for the NCAA, yet receive no wage. The perpetuation of misinformation has been a key reason why individuals either gain the correct knowledge or obtain corrupted and false information. The ability to distinguish correct information from incorrect is key and in order to accomplish this,one must learn how to identify a biased source. Source B is titled “Should College Student-Athletes Be Paid? Both Sides of the Debate” by Madisen Martinez, the article's publisher is CollegeXpress and it retains a neutral standpoint. Source C is titled “Should Athletes Get Paid” by Paul From Flotrack, the article's publisher is FloTrack and it is biased. To be biased is to be unfairly prejudiced against something or someone and to remain neutral is to neither help or support either side of a conflict or disagreement. With this said, as a consumer, it is a necessity to be able to identify a biased source when one is observed, therefore, in order to prevent the perpetuation of misinformation the reader must be able to recognize bias in media. It states that players cannot make money because they can’t work during the season and that college coaches make millions without even playing the actual game. The author can be seen targeting a certain audience when he states “For those of you who think the life of a college athlete is all glitter and glamour, you couldn’t be more wrong .(”It’s time to pay the tab for America’s college Athletes”). Kareem Abdul-Jabbar wants to expose the truth of the lives of college athletes for those who believe that all is handed to them. Also, the article does have reliable sources as it presents real data and real experiences from former athletes. The Guardian is also known to be a reliable news source. This proves that the article is credible, but may present information as biased towards their side of the argument instead of remaining neutral about the situation. In fact, the article is biased because its author Kareem Abdul Jabbar is a former college player and professional basketball player. He has experienced the college athlete life and probably speaks from these views, this gives him and the article he was written from a biased viewpoint.
