Analysis: You Can Grow Your Brain

Achieving my goals and being successful in the future are the reasons why I work hard, but often times, I admit, that when I face difficult challenges I just give up and hope for the best or the worst case scenario. But now I am in college, I am slowly letting go of my fixed mindset because if I continue having this mindset, then I should just forget about achieving my goals because I will never be able to have it. In the article “Brainology” Professor Carol Dweck informs readers about two mindsets that can affect students’ way of thinking. Meanwhile, in the article “You Can Grow Your Brain”, it suggests that a person’s brain can be developed like a muscle when a person learns or uses it. They will see challenges as motivation that will help them to be successful and they will not be afraid of making mistakes because they know that committing mistakes will just make them better. They believe that “intelligence is something that can be cultivated through effort and education” (Dweck). By learning and putting on effort on those things that they do, their knowledge will grow as well as their brain. According to “You Can Grow Your Brain”, our brain is like a muscle that “grows and gets stronger when [we] learn”. If students with growth mindset experienced a setback, they would “simply study more or study differently the next time”. Thus, benefitting them and their brain by making it stronger. As a result, growth mindset encourages long term success by making students motivated to do well. Fixed mindset affects students’ development making them think that they are not smart enough to conquer challenges that they will face. But by leaving fixed mindset in the past and adopting growth mindset, students’ perspective in life and facing challenges becomes positive. They see challenges as a motivation for them to succeed and to not stop learning because it benefits them and their brain. Students also need to dedicate time and effort on things they do, they should not stop learning because they think they are smart enough. Learning new things should be continuous because being successful does not just happen in a snap of a finger. It is not an easy path to get through, but by growing abilities, working hard and being dedicated, students are getting closer to success. As for myself, making my education as my priority by making time to do my homework and to study instead of cramming and be contented on what I know is how I am letting go of my fixed mindset. It can be tough since it is still new to me, but it is only just the beginning and it will get easier as time
