“Be there or Be Square” is a phrase used in the 1950s. It is a prime example of the society during this decade. The 50’s was a decade where prosperity and conformity flourished. This was mainly because the parents in the 50’s were just coming back from war and wanted to have money and finally have a calm lifestyle. The few people who dared to go against the status quo were often called names such as “Kooks”. The community is Fahrenheit 451 exemplifies this philosophy ideally. The people who read books, dared to be unique and different and who questioned the rules faced the consequences in Fahrenheit 451.
Books are considered as an escape from reality to most people. In Fahrenheit 451, the community considered books as dangerous or illegal. Whenever the firemen were informed about people who had books, their books were burned and the houses where burned as well. Books would make people start to think and most people in the book wanted their feeling to be “sedated”. The government in this book did not want people to have feelings or think about common things. Clarisse questioned everything about the society’s ways. When Montag started reading books and questioning, Captain Beatty started being suspicious of him. Captain Beatty sent a mechanical hound to Montag’s house as a warning to him. Captain Beatty knew more than he was showing and didn’t want Montag to know that. When Montag started reading, it started a snowball effect that he couldn’t stop. It made him break rules and it drastically changed his society and him as a person.

In conclusion, Fahrenheit 451 is book that exemplifies how the 50’s was a time of conformity. The people who went against what people thought was the normal were ridiculous and labelled as outcasts. This didn’t stop Clarisse and Montag from being rule breaks and standing out for what they loved and considered
