Analyzing Brighouse's On Education

In Part one of “On education” by Brighouse, the topics of autonomy, and schools curriculum are discussed in detailed. I found this to point to be very interesting and important to evaluate.
Firstly, his perspective of finding ones inner self and leading a self-sufficient life in order to flourish is very interesting. Brighouse point out that this can only be accomplished by being exposed to many experiences and information. Individuals can flourish when they are able to “identify with the life they are leading.” He point out that in our current times change is occurring rapidly, and children should be able to adapt, adjust and acquire new skills to deal with new scientific and moral views.

I was born Catholic but converted to Christianity as an adult. This is all because I was exposed to different religious and was able to decide for myself. I can also understand why some people may consider his ideas radical. It can be scary thought for families to see their children deviate from their religion or moral values.
Secondly, he points out that teaching should be because it is valuable to the individual’s life not because it is necessary for economic growth. He discusses about teaching to create happy citizens, and specifically adding to the curriculum life skills courses. The schools should add to their curriculum, parenting classes, balancing work and family life, and learning about saving and investing, learn about how people flourish in life, and how to use leisure time fruitfully. Brighouse discusses the idea of setting goals and having independent companies evaluate the outcomes of the programs. I think is a very important point, to create happy citizens. As he mentions whatever happens at work will affect the emotional and financial state of a person. It is important to create individuals with a sense of self-reliance that can be responsible for their income and
