In his essays, poems Henry Louis talks about how Phillis Wheatley was a mistrusted writer, and because racism was common during that time nobody believed that Wheatley was the true author of the poems that got written because her skin color was black. During her trial period, Wheatley proved that she was an original thinker, which actually helped her prove that she is the true author of the poems. I agree with Gate in both his claim that Phillis Wheatley’s trial continues and Wheatley’s point. Wheatley focused more on the idea that slaves are as intelligent, hard workers as white people. All of the three authors (Wheatley, Gates and Hughes) make the point that Culture belongs to everyone.
