I chose to analyze the film, “The Proposal”, which was released in 2009 by
Touchstone Pictures. This film featured an all-star cast: Sandra Bullock (Margaret Tate), Ryan Reynolds (Andrew Paxton), Mary Steenburgen (Andrew’s mother), Craig T. Nelson (Andrew’s father), and Betty White (Andrew’s grandmother). This film centered around Margaret Tate, a highly respected, feared, and hated executive editor in chief of a book publishing company and Andrew Paxton, Margaret’s executive assistant. Margaret learns that she is going to be deported back to Canada because her visa was denied and to save her from deportation, she convinces Andrew to marry her even though he hates her. Because Margaret needs Andrew to marry her, he holds all the cards and lets her know exactly how he feels about her throughout the movie. The scene that shows this is where Andrew lets Margaret know that in order to marry, he would have to be promoted to editor and his manuscript must be published. He also makes her get down on her knees in public and ask him to marry her. You can see this scene at www.hdmovie14.net/watch/the-proposal-2009/fullmovie-putlocker- megashare9.html (19:53-21:46).
-Star leading actresses: Sandra Bullock has starred in many roles, many comedies, while some in action. She is considered to be one of the most beautiful women in the world and is very likeable. She is incredibly talented and is able to believably play many different type characters.
-Barbed dialog with lines tossed in rapid fire: This film is completely about the interactions between Margaret and Andrew. Their interactions and altercations are what make this film so funny. They have an ability to face one another and feed off each other. A scene that shows this is when they are telling the story to their family about how Andrew proposed, of course this all being improvised on the spot. They are telling the story, cutting in on each other, and secretly putting each other down while making it seem romantic. You can see this scene at www.hdmovie14.net/watch/the-proposal-

Everything she wears states snobbery and high class. Andrew dresses for success as well while in New York but dresses more rugged in Alaska. Margaret on the other hand shows up in Alaska dressed expensive with her high-class luggage and sunglasses. -Exotic locals: This film starts and finishes in New York so there is definitely the iconic scenery. In Alaska, the use of small town shops and community is perfect. Andrew’s parents house is absolutely beautiful and the views are amazing to say the least. -First-rate character actors playing eccentric types: The supporting cast is incredible. Mary Steenburgen plays Andrew’s mother and she is perfect buffer of stability and sensibility. Craig T. Nelson plays Andrew’s father and he is the typical judgmental father. The conflicts between Andrew and his father add a whole other dynamic to the movie. Betty White plays Andrew’s grandmother and she basically steals the movie. Her command of her role is unmatched. One of the funniest scenes that I have ever seen is when Betty is dancing in the woods to connect with nature.
