“The Seafarer” The Seafarer explains a vigorous relationship between an ordinary man and a sea of uncertainty. The sea has effects on the man, such as making him feel isolated and lonely. Although the man feels isolated and lonely at times because of the sea, this doesn't stop him from visiting it. This represents the drive of a person to push through pain. In the poem many examples of the relationship between the two are shown. The tone from the narrator’s point of view is mainly discomfort and tolerance toward the sea. He has endured many cold and hard winters, As stated in lines 15 - 19; “On an ice-cold sea, whirled in sorrow, Alone in a world blown clear of love, Hung in icicles. The hailstorm flew. The only sound was the roaring sea, The freezing waves.” The narrator is comparing his cold and hard winters on the sea to life, broadly. In the beginning of the poem, the tone was more so directly in relation to just the narrator. Towards the end, the subject and comparison of God comes to play. The poem becomes more like a prayer. As well as the tone moving more towards all people. The Seafarer thanks God for His love and protection and he tells all people that we should live modestly, control our pride, and hope for heaven. The conclusion all comes together when the narrator states in lines 121- 124 “That life born in the love of God And the hope of Heaven. Praise the Holy Grace of Him who honored us, Eternal, unchanging creator of earth. Amen. The Seafarer is a poem that turns into a prayer. A poem and prayer of life, all in one sequence. From the beginning of one individual, to the relation between anyone on life. The conclusion is that in life everything may start off hard and cold. But you have a choice, a choice to find something that replaces the void of a hardship. The Seafarer’s void from life was the
