Would you glorify a man who left all his problems for others to face, has treated workers unfairly or spread rumors in order to become the best? A man who knows the struggle of having to work for low pay and poor condition yet still decides to handle his company in the same manner? Andrew Carnegie was an immigrant who was born in Dunfermline, Scotland and immigrated to the United States because of the Irish Potato Famine. He then started to work at age 12 to provide for his family. Over time he got promoted to a telegraph operator, pretty soon got a new job and started investing. Carnegie then bought J. Edgar Thomson Works Company and had bought many others. Carnegie continued his business for most of his life then sold his company and gave his money away for libraries, science research and education. …show more content…
However, Andrew Carnegie knew he was responsible for innocent lives and cheating while calling it “business”. Heroes are meant to save lives and be courageous while Carnegie was responsible for deaths and has proven to be a coward on several occasions. After many mistakes, it felt as though his philanthropy was just to cover them up. Yes, they were for good causes but sentimental value should be given as well like volunteering.
In conclusion, Carnegie is not a hero when it comes to the actual hero qualities but that title can be given to him when it comes to improving the industrial era. Carnegie has undoubtedly done bad things that has changed his ambition from start to end. He has spread rumors, treated workers unfairly and for his lack of courage had deaths he is responsible for. They were all choices made for the wrong reasons and that reason being, longing for money and beating Rockefeller. It demonstrates the importance of Carnegie’s actions and how money can change
