Andrew Jackson was born on March 15, 1767 in a log cabin in the backwoods of the Waxhaws region in the Carolinas. He joined the Patriots during the American revolution at the age of 13. He along with his older brother were messengers. During one of their runs, they were captured by British troops. Jackson refused to cooperate so out of anger, the officer slashed him. Jackson put his palm in front of his face and so his eye was not cut. From that moment on, Andrew Jackson had a deep and abiding hatred for all things British. When his mother came to get them, both of the boys had small pox. While tending to her children, his mother contracted smallpox. His mother and older brother died from the disease but Jackson survived as an orphan. When he was 20, Andrew Jackson moved to Nashville, Tennessee where he became a wealthy attorney. Andrew Jackson had many different jobs and accomplishments throughout his lifetime. He was the first person from Tennessee to serve in the House of Representatives. The common man was farmers, factory workers, and western frontiersmen. He was interested in the common man because he had grown up poor and in the frontier. Jackson had lived the same life as everyone else so he knew their needs and what decisions they want the president to take. He had an intense distrust of eastern “establishment”, monopolies, and special privileges. Jackson’s heart and soul was with plain folk. He believed that the common man was capable of uncommon things. His idea of shifting power from the wealthy and educated elites to the common man was known as Jacksonian Democracy.
