In the movie, Garden State, the main character, Andrew Largeman is a depressed, heavily medicated struggling young actor. Andrew goes back home in small town to attend his mother’s funeral. From going back he is confronted by different aspects of his life he had originally left behind to pursue his acting career. As a result, this paper will explore three theoretical approaches to counselling for Andrew including solution-focused therapy, cognitive and attachment theory From this, it will include a theory based assessment and intervention plan that will be the most appropriate for the client Andrew. Overall, this paper will look more in depth about who the main character is and what intervention plan will be the most appropriate for him.
Early on in the movie, it showed the level of problem of the main character, Andrew who is a young struggling actor who works as a waiter at a Vietnamese restaurant. He has depression and was heavily medicated until recently when he decided that he wanted to see what it is like without being on medication since he has been on medication most of his life. He has been on medication ever since he had accidently paralyzed his mother from pushing her over a dishwasher door when he was just nine years old. He comes across as understanding and aware of other people’s feelings.
