The poem, A Poison Tree, expresses the emotion of anger and how it slowly morphs into a poison apple tree. In the beginning, the author expresses how he is angry with his friend; however, his anger is soon diminished when he expresses his emotion. Likewise, the author explains his anger with his enemy and how his anger does not leave, simply because he does not reveal it. In the second stanza, the author compares his anger to a tree, which begins to be watered with his fear and resentment. Likewise, the false smile he uses whenever his enemy is around emulates sunlight further helping the tree grow. By the third stanza, the tree grows an apple and that attracts the attention of his enemy. The enemy then sneaks into the garden and eats the poison apple. The tree symbolizes the friendship and connection they share. However, after the incident in the alley, Amir becomes ridden with guilt, which morphs into anger. Amir expresses his anger towards Hassan, turning him into the “enemy,” by pelting Hassan with pomegranates in hopes that he would retaliate and hit him back, therefore reducing his guilt. When that does not occur, the anger begins to accumulate and the pomegranate tree begins to die off, similar to Amir and Hassan’s friendship. The poison tree begins to grow in replace of the pomegranate tree through Amir’s anger. Amir continues to water it by showing his resentment towards Hassan because he believes that is the only way to deal with the guilt. This is shown in the line, “I want you to stop harassing me. I want you to go away.” The apple now growing on this tree is filled with guilt and anger and the pomegranate tree is slowly withering away.
