A rat saves lives-millions each day. No, a rat does not single handedly save these lives, but it does so by being a subject for animal experimentation. One small, white rat could provide clues for developing a new antibiotic to fight the common cold or even more extreme-the cure to cancer or brain damage. A thank-you might not only belong to the researchers and doctors, but to the animals used in their experiments. Animal experimentation should be continued as many animals respond similarly to humans, animals have shorter life spans, and it gives researchers a way to test without human harm.
Animal experimentation is a positive factor for medical advancement as it gives researchers a living organism to use for testing purposes. As researchers

Therefore, their reactions to the biological or genetic effects of medicines are similar as well. Cats are often used as they are considered useful for understanding human biology (Murnaghan). A chimpanzee’s DNA is 99% similar to that of humans (Explore Pros & Cons of Controversial Issues). Non-human primates are used in research as they are successfully used in testing to study genetics and psychological causes (Murnaghan). With the use of primates, research is conducted efficiently and results are given. They are often used to find treatments to deadly diseases like AIDS and cancer (Murnaghan). Mice and other rodents are most commonly used because humans are highly concerned with testing on chimpanzee, cats and dogs. Mice are common subjects to animal experimentation because they are a comparable genetic model to humans and experience the same diseases (Explore Pros & Cons of Controversial Issues). Rats are subject to experimentation for oncology as they can develop large tumors to be tested upon just like in humans (Hunnicutt 41). The animals that scientists experiment upon are chosen based upon the fact each has a major similarity to
