“According to the US-based Foundation for Biomedical Research, 'animal research has played a vital role in virtually every major medical advance of the last century - for both human and veterinary health.” (Kristina Cook 2006). There are so many drugs have been made possible through the research done on animals. Animal testing made great benefits on human life and medical research, not only on the length of our lives but also the quality of our lives. This essay will provide some examples to show the benefits of animal testing. However, in today’s situation more and more people believe in that animal should not be used for testing medical research and drugs; they believe that animals have the same rights to live a life and not be used for testing. This essay will outline the advantages of animal testing.
When humans face great problems about our lives, we need to create new drugs to solve the problem. Since animals have similar physical processes to humans, such like monkeys and rabbits. This make the new drug testing become less harmful to the human body.
The progress made in reducing death rates from heart disease and stroke is saving the lives of over one million Americans each year. From this fact we could see over one million Americans were saved each year, if we count the whole world it would be much more than one million (animal research benefit.) This is a large amount of people has been saved just for one year, since statins were introduced in 1987 until today 2015 how many lives were saved? However do not forget, before stains were introduced in 1987, they had been test on animal first. Due to the large amount of people that were saved by this improvement in science, we should say the benefits of animal testing for human life are tremendous.
Another disease that influences a lot of Americans is diabetes. According to research 18.2 million people, 6.3 percent of the U.S. population has diabetes, which is a leading cause of death and disability (animal research benefit.) For this disease there are also new treatments and drugs, including development of quick-acting and long-acting insulin. Of course, this development also is the result of researches that involving animal models.
According to Labs the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) that lab use mice, rats, birds, reptiles and amphibians are exempted from the minimal protections. From this rule we could know that animal testing has more benefits for humans. One more reason to support animal testing is because it is cheap and has a large supply for it.
However, many people saying that animal testing is cruel. They believe that animals have a same value of life as humans; they have the rights to live. But, it would be much crueler to test the new drugs on people; people could die because there was not enough information for the new drugs. So if we could test on animal before we test on humans and get more information. Which way should we choose to do; it is obviously that we would choose the less harmful way for human.
The people against animal research say that the results got from animals do not apply to humans, like the face products,…
