In a world free of disobedient dogs, our lives would be remarkably easier. You tell your pup to sit, and he sits. You tell him to get off the table, and he jumps down without question. But, this is not the world we live in, for that is a fantasy. In real life, animals don’t always obey. And what happens when they don’t comply with our requests? We get angry, and this can lead to unintentional abuse. We’ve all seen the television shows with the dogs that pee in the house and then get hit for it. As if that smack to the muzzle will surely prevent it from ever happening again. But this is not, nor ever will be, the proper way to stop this bad behavior. Does it better a human's mentality to hurt an animal? Maybe to some. It could have them feeling like a God, to have control over the life of this poor creature. But to many, it hurts their character. Hitting an animal in the heat of the moment may seem like the only possible way to solve the problem. But ten minutes later, when the dog still won’t look you in the eyes, you start to feel the guilt. The animal avoids you entirely for the rest of the night. The guilt you feel manifests and suddenly you can’t stop thinking about it. You start to think, “If I could do that to an innocent animal who loves me unconditionally, what would I do to a person? Would I do the same? Worse?” These images do not stop until maybe the next day; if you’re lucky. I have seen this guilt on a person, and the lasting effects it has on an animal. Not all dogs at the pound have a squeaky clean backstory. The abuse and assault can bring the animal to biting a hand that goes to pet them or even running from a certain gender, such as my boyfriend’s old dog. She was very scared of men. Not because she was sexist, but because her previous owner, who was a male, used to beat her. This mental scar led to her running away from a loving home. Was the abuse beneficial? No, it ruined a perfect family, and a dog’s mental state. So, to ruin a friendship, or to stop an action? That is the real question. Slapping or abusing a dog for doing a natural instinct does not benefit the dog in question; and it doesn’t benefit you
