“Hotel du Lac”, a novel written by Anita Brookner, tells a life story of a woman named Edit Hope. Edit Hope, writer of romance novels, secretly believes in the power of love and the happy endings. She did not manage to find that yet and the chances of finding it are very small. The story is set on the shores of Lake Geneva and begins with her arrival in the Hotel du Lac, a quiet Swiss hotel situated near the lake which usual guests are mostly women who want to escape from the from the eyes of public. Everything is seen through Edith’s eyes and as she encounters a variety of people in the hotel she slowly reveals their reason for coming along with their life stories. All of them, except her own. Anita Brookner is one of the greatest contemporary writers of English fiction. Hotel du Lac is a Booker Prize winning novel in 1984. Anita Brookner uses environmental features to describe main character’s feelings in her novels. She focuses on details what is best seen in describing the Swiss landscape and the characters in the novel. In 1968 Anita was Slade Professor at Cambridge, the first woman ever to hold this position. She is the author of Watteau, the Genius of the future; Greuze and Jacques- Louis David. She has written five novels including Hotel du Lac as being her most successful one. The novel is mostly written about Edith`s life, however, her future stays unrevealed with the hope in better life. All the female characters represent different types of women, and the novel analysis the protagonist through interaction with hotel guests. I liked the novel very much because it is written form the heart of one woman and represents reality,
