Bradstreet vs Edwards According to the Cambridge English Online Dictionary, the definition of a Puritan is “a member of an English religious group in the 16th and 17th centuries who wanted to make church ceremonies simpler and emphasized moral that behavior that forbids many pleasures. Anne Bradstreet was a middle-aged American settler and author. Married at the age of sixteen, Bradstreet sailed to America in 1630 where she built a new life and a family. Although it was often frowned upon for women to share their beliefs or opinions, it didn’t stop Bradstreet from writing. Another eventual American writer would be Jonathan Edwards. Born in Connecticut early 1700s, Edwards was a natural born religious dedicant. His early years were devoted to gaining status in the church community. Edwards believes that that god is furious. Edwards reveals this throughout his writing when he said “The wrath of god burns against us,” (Edwards “Sinners in the House…” 126). He believes that all sinners deserve the worst, “Yea there is nothing else that is to be given as a reason why you do not not this very moment drop down into hell,” (Edwards “Sinners in the House…” 128). Jonathan’s personality is also one of uniquiety. Throughout his writing Edwards’s tone is intense, angry, and border-lining threatening. For example when Edwards says, “There is no other reason to be why you have not gone to hell, since you have set here in the house of god, provoking his pure eyes by your sinful wicked manner of attending his solemn worship.” (Edwards “Sinners in the House…” 127) Edwards wants the audience to feel guilty for their sins so that his message gets across.
