Throughout Anne’s diary entry on January 2, 1944 (Pages 127-128), Anne begins to grow more mature in regards to her seemingly broken relationship with her mother by being ashamed of her hotheaded diary entries with the topic of her mother, learning to keep her mouth closed when necessary, and is much more calm than what Anne calls ‘A year ago Anne’.
Anne first shows mature behavior when she starts the entry, which states, “This morning I had nothing to do I turned over some pages of my diary and several times I came across letters dealing with the subject ‘Mummy’ in such a hotheaded way that I was quite shocked, and asked myself: “Anne is it really you who mentioned hate? Oh, Anne, how could you!” This line from the diary clearly shows that Anne is truly disappointed in her behavior.

This is evident because in Anne’s diary it states, “I soothe my conscience now with the thought that it is better for hard words to be on paper than that Mummy should carry them in her heart.” Here, Anne shows maturity by keeping her harsh words to herself rather than adding stress and sorrow to her Mother’s heart, which should also change her relationship with her mother. Another example being when Anne writes, “- it is certainly understandable that she snapped at me.” This line from her diary shows great maturity because part of being mature is understanding adults decisions and behavior.
Lastly, Anne learned to keep her mouth closed at the right time. In the diary, Anne writes, “I usually keep my mouth shut if I get annoyed, and so does she, so we appear to get on much better together.” Anne realized that in some situations, the ideas of a child are not needed and ignored. Anne’s mother also learned that sometimes just being quiet and assessing your mind can help a situation greatly and help avoid an unneeded argument. This was an extremely useful skill in the stress inducing environment that was the Secret
