Anne Hutchinson is historically significant because she challenged the Puritans’ doctrine. Believing in antinomianism, Hutchinson presented the idea of a Puritan society not bound to the laws of God or man. Considering her beliefs an act of heresy, Hutchinson was exiled from the Bay Colony. Rhode Island was deemed a sewer by Puritan neighbors because its population was that of outcasts. The colony granted religious freedom to Jews and Catholics and the separation of church and state allowed for more democratic government. However, Puritan neighbors still considered the colony to be a collection of the “Lord’s Debris.”
