Anorexia Nervosa: Effectiveness of Psychological Therapy as a Reinforcer of Weight Gain in Anorexic Girls INTRODUCTION Eating Disorder has become a very important topic researched on by psychiatrist, psychologist and medical practitioners. This is because there has been a high increase in the population of people suffering from this disorder. National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD) found that up to twenty-four million people in the US suffer from eating disorder (James, 2015). However, this study was focused on a specific type of eating disorder called anorexia nervosa and the amount of weights gained by anorexic girls after using two different psychological therapy treatments (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Family Therapy) in comparison to the control group.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is a type of psychological therapy that works towards helping patients overcome difficulties by identifying negative thinking, behaviour and emotion and developing alternative positive ways (McLeod, 2008) It has been argued that CBT emphasized how important dysfunctional cognition and schemata affects the development and maintenance of AN (Channon, Silva, Hemsley & Perkin, 1989) Evidence has shown that CBT is effective in treating many health problems which have similar symptoms as AN such as depression, obsessions, psychological distress, anxiety and post-traumatic stress (Galsworthy-Francis & Allan, 2014) which shows that CBT is a logical treatment for
