Anthem, written by Ayn Rand, is a book about the character Equality. In the beginning of the story, Equality, who is scared to commit a transgression, meets a couple of friends named International and Union. In the middle of the story, he finds a tunnel that leads to a subway that he leaves the social gatherings after work to go to, and he meets a girl named Liberty, and his life mandate is to become a street sweeper. Throughout the story Equality starts committing transgressions and disrespecting authority. In the end of the story, he gets caught going to his tunnel; he is sent to jail; he gets whipped until he will speak, but he breaks out of jail, and he and Liberty go to the Uncharted Forest. He says “I owe nothing to my brothers and I am neither foe nor friend to my brothers.” (Rand 96). Also, he says “I ask none to live for me nor do I live for any others.” (Rand 96). Personally, I agree with that statement because you only need yourself. Another way he denounces them is by saying “I covet no man’s soul nor is my soul theirs to covet.” (Rand 96). He says that because his brothers wants him dead when he shows them that he created electricity. Finally, he says “I am done with this creed of corruption.” (Rand 97). The creed of corruption he is referring to is the government. In my opinion, Equality would agree with the advice Rand offers in her short essay. There are a few things that he would agree on. For example, when she says “When your impartial attitude declares, that neither the good nor the evil may expect anything from you; whom do you betray and whom do you encourage?” (Rand). He would also agree that when she says “There is no escape from the fact that men have to make choices and there is no escape from moral values.” (Rand). I absolutely think Equality is correct for becoming critical of the leaders of his society and denouncing them in moral
