For the past decade, anti-horse-slaughter bills have been introduced to Congress in the hopes of putting an end to the slaughter of horses. Unfortunately, none of the bills have been able to be completed, even though there is support across both party lines. And although in 2007, slaughter of horses was put to an end in the United States, it hasn’t done anything to keep horses from their death sentence in foreign countries. There’s multiple issues at hand when horses are slaughtered; first, each week roughly 2,885 horses are inhumanely rounded up and transported to Canada or Mexico to be slaughtered for human consumption; second, horse meat is not meant for human consumption. From examination of previous attempts within the last decade to pass acts that would prohibit horse slaughter, none of proposed acts have been passed. Originally, I suspected that the bill would have no trouble passing since it has bipartisan support, but after learning more about similar bills and the fact that there hasn’t been action on the bill since January 25th, I’m now disagreeing with my original assumption. Furthermore, the SAFE Act has only been sponsored by 20 republicans compared to the 77 democrats that sponsor this act. Given that republicans hold complete majority and based on the amount of republican sponsors, I suspect that this act is not on the republican agenda. Another factor that I contribute to the failing of this act is the level of awareness of horse slaughter in the United States. A large proportion of Americans are unaware that horses are being inhumanely slaughtered for human consumption, and that the meat is toxic to humans. When the large majority of the population is in support for change to be made, a bill will get passed. But since there isn’t a large mass of voices speaking on this issue, government will most likely put this issue on the back
