Antidepressants are a psychoactive drug that is used to treat major depressive disorder first introduced in the 1950s. They are effective in boosting mood because the drugs increase the patient’s norepinephrine and/or serotonin levels (Ettinger, 2014). It takes roughly two weeks for patients to even see results and because of this, some people have a hard time taking these drugs since they feel like they are not working the way they should be. Antimanic drugs are used to treat bipolar disorder and mania. They are known as the mood stabilizers because it helps those who suffer from this disorder to not be in either the mania or depressive state.
