Antigone is a play written by Sophocles, this play takes place in Greece and is believed to have been written around 441 B.C. This play is centered around the actions Antigone makes, however one other character also sticks out from the crowd, Creon. Creon is the ruler of Thebes; however, he makes many mistakes as a ruler and the power and pride runs to his head and effects his decisions. Teiresias, a prophet, says a very wise quote the heavily relates to Creon, “The only crime is pride.” This short but impactful quote not only applies to the play Antigone, but also comes true in many events in history. Events such as the Titanic for example, the titanic was one of the biggest tragedies in U.S history. Over 1,503 innocent lives were lost that day due to the Captains, and everyone who worked on the Titanic’s pride of the ship they created. How overconfident they were, they believed nothing could go wrong. One worker even said “Not even God can sink the Titanic” (Titanic Historical Society). Because of this never-ending pride of their beloved ship, they did not worry and carefully monitor the ship because in their minds they believed that the ship could never be sunk. Another great example of people thinking they can do nothing wrong because of pride, is the history of the Maginot line. The Maginot Line is a what the French called a Military marvel, it was essentially a network of underground fortification that were supposedly impenetrable. This “wall” was designed to stop the Nazi onslaught and prevent a repeat of WWI. However, the French were incredibly over-confident. All the Nazi’s had to do was break through the Belgian defenses in the north and trap the helpless French, British and Belgian armies. The border protection was a complete fail and the French’s pride of the wall caused them to miss a very important weak spot.
