In the play Antigone by Sophocles, there are many theme statement that can be explored into depth. A statement that stands out is the idea that rules are meant to be broken when they contradict what should be morally correct. Creon is blinded by the laws set before him, which leads to his downfall. He cannot see that by not letting Antigone bury her brother he's breaking the Gods Laws. Creon says, “[Polyneces] hath been proclaimed to our people that none shall grace with him in sepulture or lament, but leave him on buried, a corpse for birds and dogs to eat, he ghostly sight of shame.” Creon is too upset asked with the government laws that he was blinded and couldn't see that he was breaking much greater moral codes, which caused him to suffer and regret his decisions. …show more content…
Antigone says, “ but I shall bury him and if I die for it, death will be sweet...I must please the dead more than the living for I Will lie in death forever.” by burying her brother Antigone breaks Creon's laws, but it is seen as morally correct by the people of Thebes. She believes that the love and loyalty for her brother is much stronger than any law set in place generations ago, even if her beliefs are condemn her to death. The theme statement is applicable to Antigone because she never denied that she was the one that buried her brother, hence her downfall.
