Antihero Dexter Morgan
The antihero has become one of the most popular and most used types of hero’s today. But why is it that the antihero is so popular? In comparison to the conventional hero who is “Generally admired for his bravery, strength, [and] charm” (Anti-Hero - Examples and Definition of Anti-Hero). According to Heather Havrilesky’s essay “No Sympathy For The Devil”, the show Dexter has a character named Dexter Morgan that is an excellent example of an antihero on television currently. Dexter Morgan is known as an intelligent, handsome, sarcastic man who works for the Miami Police Department as a forensics analyst. But his victims know him better as a serial killer who has a conscious.
It is true that Dexter Morgan was created to let the viewers down. Even Heather Havrilesky says that antiheros “are made to disappoint us” (Havrilesky 468). Antiheros are the perfect type of hero because the viewer can relate most to this type of hero. The viewer can relate most to this hero because the antihero is the most realistic of all the hero’s. The antihero has become so popular in comparison to the conventional hero’s because the viewer knows at the get go that they are going to be let down by this character. A viewer knowing they are going to get let down by their hero makes the hero feel more human like. It is important for a viewer to feel that the antihero like Dexter Morgan is more human like because it makes the viewer feel as though he or she can also be a hero and conquer their own life. It makes viewers dreams and desires feel more attainable if this antihero can do it. When a viewer is watching anything they really want to feel like it is their own story. They want it to feel somewhat believable and
