In William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, Antony uses the rhetorical appeal ethos to persuade the Roman people to turn against the conspirators. Brutus has just finished his speech at Caesar’s funeral and turned the people of Rome against Caesar. Antony is starting his speech, beginning to turn the Romans against Brutus and the conspirators by stating “ Come I to speaking Caesar’s funeral, he was my friend, faithful and only to me” (84- 85). By being at Caesar’s funeral and reminding everyone how close he was with Caesar, the rhetorical appeal that Antony is using is ethos. Showing that Caesar was his true friend, a very faithful one and only Antony is close enough to him to see this.
