Human history is plagued with atrocities committed by powerful people who get off the hook scot-free, until recently. This is happening through new world courts, like the ICC (International Criminal Court). Anyone should be able to be tried in court for serious crimes against humanity. This will be shown through past huge crimes committed, how major criminals got off the hook, and how we can change that. The concept of crimes against humanity, which is the ICC’s main focus, was first introduced in World War 1 with things like mustard gas and other torture mechanics being prominently used.
One of the major crimes committed that everyone knows about is the Holocaust. In the Holocaust Adolf Hitler brought about the death of around 6 million innocent Jewish people. If he would not have committed suicide the world would have wanted him to answer for all of his crimes committed. Then however there was no ICC at that time so the trial of Hitler likely would have been left to Germany itself or a neighboring country. This can be problematic to victims who would like to see fair justice done to the powerful people who wronged them.

Now, however offenders who once could have hidden behind sovereign immunity are being brought to the International Criminal Court. The UN has established that leaders who order crime but do not commit it are still responsible for those crimes. Going back to the example of the Holocaust everyone remembers and blames Hitler for all of the terrible things done. People remember how Joseph Stalin was also a horrendous ruler who was responsible for the deaths of 20 million people. Now imagine if these leaders could get away with everything they had done.
