Aphonia Clericorum: The Freedom Ride

The term aphonia clericorum describes a loss of voice after an injury or disease that impairs your larynx, such as laryngeal cancer. But that is not the type of voice loss being discussed in this inquiry. When someone is denied a voice by a figure or group with power over them, it makes it a lot harder for them to stand up for themselves and make a positive change. That is what the freedom ride aims to remedy. The Freedom Ride was a 15-day bus journey through rural NSW, aiming to show everyone living in those towns the disempowerment faced by indigenous Australians in their communities. It was started by a group of students from the University of Sydney, and the elected president was Charles Perkins, at time one of two students at the university
