The novel “Lord of the Flies” written by William Golding tells a story about a group of English boys who attempt to create their own civilization but fail when the innate savagery within each of the boys prevails. Francis Coppola's film, “Apocalypse Now” revolves around the main character Willard’s struggle to maintain his sanity as he hunts down Colonel Kurtz. William Goulding’s, “Lord of the Flies” and, “Apocalypse now”, demonstrate that it is human instinct to lean towards savagery when isolated from the constructive rules of society. In “Lord of the Flies”, Jacks character represents evil and darkness where violent methods are used to maintain his leadership. Jack’s violent methods are displayed when Sam and Eric told Ralph that Jack will be hunting for him with “A stick sharpened at both ends" (198). The quote is a reference to the Lord of the Flies meaning that Jack intends to kill Ralph and place his head on the spear, as he did to the pig’s head. The viciousness of Jacks tribal practices and the brutality of their actions that consumes them leading to their disregard for human life. Similarly, in “Apocalypse Now”, Colonel Kurtz creates his own tribe and proclaims himself as their God. At, 2:33:43 the scene displays severed heads thrown on the ground by Kurtz, used as a sign of power and to scare his enemies. His excessive barbaric behavior breaks from recognition of basic moral code signifying his decent into savagery. Being away from civilization dehumanized the values of Kurtz and amplifies his violent features.
