On March 23, 1775, Patrick Henry was at the Virginia Convention which was held in Richmond at Saint John’s Church. Here he spoke to Virginia’s colonial leaders. Since the members of the convention were educated men, they were able to recognize Henry’s allusions to the Bible. Henry effectively used allusions to persuade his fellow Virginians to raise a militia and join the war against the British.
