Applying the Background and Methodology of the Research Process to Problems in Health Care
Nurse practitioners who work in rural communities found teen pregnancy to be a huge problem. A peer-reviewed research paper entitled “Who Will Listen? Rural Teen Pregnancy Reflection.” which was published by The Journal for Nurse Practitioners. The study uses teenagers and their perspective about how to prevent pregnancy and their knowledge about the issue.
Definition of the problem
Within the U.S., rural areas tend to have the highest rate of teen pregnancies when compared to state rates. This issue brings about questioning….why are the rates higher in rural areas? Teen pregnancies have become a huge problem, and has caused researchers to investigate the issue. The article I chose was, “Who Will Listen? Rural Teen Pregnancy Reflections” by Josie A. Weiss. The article was published by The Journal for Nurse Practitioners by way of the American College of Nurse Practitioners. The research was conducted to resolve the teen pregnancy issue based on the Theory of Adolescent Sexual Decision Making (TASDM). “The TASDM theory has two main objectives that include the risk-promoting environments teens experience and exposure to risky situation that create the situations teens use to justify sexual behavior” (Weiss, 2012).

An expense and medical problem with teen pregnancy is the medical expenses suffered with both the teenager and the infant. “These statistics indicate that teen pregnancy result from family with no insurance and no means to pay the medical expenses teen pregnancy incurs” (Weiss, 2012). The social issue develops when the mother can not finish high school due to pregnancy and becoming a mother. Many teen mothers become reliant on welfare, and government assistance programs. A low income rate also develops amongst the teenage mothers.
Why is the problem important for HEALTH CARE ADMINISTRATORS to study?
The teen pregnancy problem is an important topic for healthcare administrators to study because it is resulting in billions of dollars having to be paid by taxpayers. Also, healthcare administrators play a role when it comes to prevention, and clinics to provide needed services.
Study purpose: What is the purpose of the study?
The purpose of the teenage pregnancy study is to develop an understanding as to what decision-making methods teens use and why teen pregnancy is so common these days. The research was also done to analyze essays
