Title Is Moses too hard on his son Adam? Why does Adam believe his father does not love him? April Morning is a 1961 novel by Howard Fast. This novel depicts the Battle of Lexington and Concord from the perspective of Adam Cooper. Moses Cooper, Adam’s father, is a farmer in Lexington and a leader in the revolutionary activities. Moses is firm, a leader, and eventually has acceptance. Moses is a round and dynamic character, who portrays firmness at the beginning of the novel. “He doesn’t lose patience, Granny. He doesn’t have any patience to begin with” (Fast 9). Adam wants to be treated like a man but Moses still treats him as if he were a child. Although Adam does as he is told Moses is often short-tempered. “How big are you, Adam” “Tall”? “Do you know other ways of being big” (Fast 14)? He is hard on his son until he hears that Adam does not think that he loves him. “Of all idiotic ideas! There a boy, my first-born son-why, how could any man love a son any more than I love that boy” (Fast 45). Moses was strict towards his son because he wants him to mature into a good man. “Yesterday he was a boy,” Father replied, his voice dull and troubled. “Tonight, he’s not” (Fast 73) Moses was proud that Adam signed the paper. Moses was firm in the beginning, was a leader throughout, and towards the end of his life he became accepting. Although his part in the war was short-lived, Moses was an important leader in his community. Moses is too hard on Adam which resulted in Adam feeling like his father did not love him. Once Moses saw that Adam signed the muster book and was trying to be a man, he realized that he has been too hard on his son.
