Back in 1775, Reverends remained very strict yet strong members of the community. Most of the time there was only one in each town, so they would do a lot more than just lecture at church on Sundays. This Reverend from April Morning by Howard Fast shows what a Reverend would have gone through on April 18th during the Revolutionary War. The Reverend in this book is an opinionated, always positive and a very strong character. The Reverend has a very strong opinion about the war and everyday life. There was no way that they were going to get him to change his mind. “The Reverend carried no gun or victuals, nor did he appear to be downcast” (Fast 82). “Nobody fights in God’s cause. Isn’t it enough to kill in freedom’s name? No one kills in God’s cause. He can only ask God’s forgiveness” (Fast 139). He eventually changed his mind on his own then grabbing a weapon and some powder, he realized that in the middle of a war like this he was lucky to still be alive. This shows that even after the war and all the things that the townspeople had been through he tried to bring some normal back in their lives.
