A flawed character always divides viewers opinions

Introduction

After watching and studying Revolutionary Road, I have concluded that a flawed character always divides viewers opinions.

While analysing different critics opinions and views on the character of April Wheeler, I found many contrasting ideas and discovered that there are many different views on April as a character being both negative and positive. The three main critics I studied were Anna McGraw, Iris Watts Hirideyo and Thomas Stewart. These three critics all showed different views on April Wheeler and the life she lived.

Iris states “April Wheeler is an emotional hurricane, her own earthquake, her own natural disaster” while also going on to state “she is brave and a coward”. This statement not only contradicts itself but also that of the whole report. Iris’s report contains many sentences which contract each other, illustrating the inability to make a defined opinion on April, leaving the report neutral. The argument that April Wheeler creates her own drama is illustrated in both reports and so showing contrast between the two. However Iris goes on to state that unlike Anna’s report April doesn't just make her own drama but instead due to her character the drama finds her, much like a a natural disaster can not be predicted nor controlled. Iris believes April to be bright, trying, tempestuous and beautiful while in the same breathe also claiming her to be sad, dull and unlived. This shows a wide variety of impressions just one critic has of the same character, contrasting or otherwise. This does lead to believe that any charter with a flaw is going to divide viewers opinions just because of the fact that a single person cannot decide for themselves whether a character is bright or dull, therefore how are all viewers expected to have the same opinion. Iris’s report also contrasts and contradicts with the viewpoint of critic Thomas Stewart who holds Aprils character in very high
